Liverpool 0-2 Aston Villa
Well that was unexpected... The opening game of the season and we not only beat the Champions but beat them comfortably with the better of the game in terms of chances created and possession.
Both sides went for it with attacking formations and, whilst the opportunities came early, it did look like the 2 would cancel each other out with the game reaching half time at 0-0. We were growing concerned about the fitness implications of extra time and penalties with the league season to kick off next week. Fortunately we found the breakthrough just after half time when former Liverpool midfielder Svante Ingelsson took advantage of a lucky break from Ben Chilwell's mis kicked clearence. The game was still in the balance until the last 10 minutes when new club captain Diogo Nascimento, on a sub for Zac Butterworth, played the ball through for Ansu Fati to seal the win. 10 minutes later it was all over and Nascimento finished his first game with the armband lifting a trophy for the club. Hopefully the first of many!
The game was played in the spirit and atmosphere that was warranted to honour Graham Brown. Both sides going for it and making an entertaining spectacle with plenty of chances and action. Considering the rivalry between these teams, it was a great occasion played in excellent spirit.
So a great way to start the season with a win over our big rivals and hopefully this stands us in good stead for the coming year. We can't learn from or read too much into just one game but the team played very positively and the clean sheet is always a bonus. We still feel we're a few players short and are scouring the market but it's quiet as ever so we're having to do what we can. Hopefully we can get a couple in to add to the depth and then kick on to be competitive on allf ronts this time around. Beating Liverpool like this every time would be a massive help for that!!!
