Aston Villa U23 3-3 Bournemouth U23 - a.e.t. Bournemouth U23 win 2-3 on penalties

Very unlucky of us to draw the second placed Prem team in the second round of the cup and Matt got the better of us once again. Looking at the stats (65% possession, 28 shots to 9, 20 on target to 6) I think we can be pretty aggrieved not to have won but we have to put those opportunities away better. In fairness we have been all season and still scored three today but it should have been more. Once our strikers Rory Wilson and Tom Costello had put us 3-1 ahead the game was ours for the taking but we allowed them back in to get an 87th minute equaliser. Then we were terrible in the shootout with only Quinn and Taylor scoring. Unfortunately we had subbed Costello and Dembele by that point or it may have made a difference.

Still this may be a blessing in disguise as the players are motoring towards rating up and we are going to have to find transfers or a way to bring extras in. By going out of this we end up with a few fewer games - indeed now even if we win the league cup we are halfway through the season. That may mean we hold on just about to the squad we have or some variation of it before the season ends.

On the flip side this is a competition that has been kind to us and the earliest we have exited since season 15 whe, as it happens, we lost over two legs on away goals to Bournemouth in round two. In fact this is now the second successive season we have lost to Matt's team on pens in this one as this was a repeat of last year's final. With them the only team to beat us over 90 minutes this season as well (played 14 won 13 in games against other teams) it's fair to say we are sick of the sight of them.

But we take the positives and move on. Like we say - more chance to rest and less chance for players to rate up. It would have been nice to go further but this comp wasn't top priority so not the end of the world

Wolverhampton Wanderers U23 0-1 Derby County

The second time this season Derby have beaten us as they were the first to do it - at home as well. This one was decided early when Miracle Adewole got himself sent off before Jaden Philogene scored the only goal. We gave a good account of ourselves but we needed that miracle from that point on.

So diesppointed to crash out but we're still fighting on two fronts and this gives us more opportunity to rest players. It was a bad week for us with the league defeat as well so hopefully we can take stock and come back stronger for the next game
