Pottering About

Post by Ray W »

Stoke City News

Today sees the unveiling of three new midfielders that have signed for the Potters and the departure of three of the existing squad.

Exciting 21 year old English attacking midfielder Jadon Sancho and 19 year old Welsh defensive midfielder Ethan Ampadu join the Potters from Chelsea in a deal that takes Bruno Fernandes in the opposite direction. It is felt that both Sancho and Ampadu will be a good fit in the Potters squad and that Fernandes can realise his ambition of playing the top flight sooner rather than later. In addition, the Potters are pleased to announce the signing of 19 year old attacking midfielder Omari Forson from Southampton after a £40m fee was agreed between the two clubs.

The influx of these players has meant the exit for Kai Havertz from the senior squad and newly promoted defender Hill from the U23’s has also left the club. Both players have been praised for their contributions, with Hill in particular playing a key role in the defensive strength of the U23 side this season.

Stoke City would like to take the opportunity of thanking the management at both Chelsea and Southampton.

Stoke City Press Release

Stoke City are pleased to announce the signing of talented young 19 year old Brazilian striker from Brighton Gabriel Martinelli. He joins the Potters in a deal that sees both 26 year old German midfielder Emre Can and 29 year old South Korean striker Son Hueng-min leave the club in the opposite direction after several seasons of solid service. Our best wishes go with both players and we look forward to an exciting future with young Gabriel.

It is expected that Martinelli will play a major role up front during the Jet Cup played during this pre-season period. This should give him ample opportunity to gel with his teammates and understand the footballing philosophy here at the Bet365 stadium.

In a further move to bolster the Stoke squad before the upcoming season starts, the Potters have signed a goalkeeper they had been scouting for some time. It is with great pleasure that Stoke City today signed 22 year old Netherlands goalkeeper Justin Bijlow who will make a fine replacement for the departed loan goalkeeper Andre Onana who returned to Newcastle United as the season ended. Jack Butland will retain his back-up role for the upcoming season while playing as first choice for the early part of the Jet Cup.

Manager Ray Wallace said of the two signings “We have been after Gabriel for some time now and it’s good to finally get him in a Stoke shirt. It cost us dearly in two fine players, but we have to think of the future and we did end up with some cash to pop in the bank. After he expected departure of Andre a the end of his loan spell we really had to spend a lot of time on getting a top quality keeper in if we want to go one better than our promotion Play-off final loss. In Justin I think we have found just the man to give us a massive amount of strength and solidity at the back. I’m hopeful we can keep teams at bay and with Gabriel matched with Emmanuel and Angel up front we should have an even better season than the last.”

Stoke City Press Release

Stoke City are pleased to announce that the captains of the senior and U23 squads for the upcoming season have been selected by manager Ray Wallace. They are both strikers and are to be Gabriel Martinelli for the senior side and Ryan Cassidy for the U23’s.

The manager commented after announcing the pair to say “Yes you may think it a big step asking our new young striker to shoulder the load of being captain, but I’m confident that Garbriel can lead by example. One thing is for sure we are not short of leaders on the pitch so he won’t be a lone voice keeping the team going when things get tough. Ryan had a great season in the U23’s last year and was instrumental in the U23’s push for promotion only missing out in a closely fought Play-off final. We fully expect him to kick on from there and become even more of a threat in front of goal as a foil to fellow strikers Joe Gelhardt and Moussa Dembele."
