The sort of result that makes you despair with football. We got our tactics wrong - not expecting them to come to us and play passing granted - but we definitely didn't deserve to come away from this one with nothing. We had home advantage and are the better side of the two. Although it is close we just have the edge in the outfield but in goal we had a 22r GK vs them having a 19r. That should make a big difference. What actually happened is their goalie made 11 saves and gained 104 abs keeping a clean sheet. Our guy made 4 and conceded 2 goals.
It's not like we didn't create chances. We had 18 shots - 10 of them on target and had more corners. But we just couldn't find the net. After a great start in the cup this is a terrible way to kick off our league season and, with Liverpool and Everton so strong, this already puts us massively on the back foot.
We did get some good abs gains off the back of it but that is potentially forcing players towards promotion which we don't want. Nelson Abbey returned to the squad for this game and had a decent run out but we know we will lose him again very soon when either Dowell or Costello rate up. When both go we will also lose one of them - it's a real mine field at the moment. Hopefully a few squads will struggle this year but we're going to probably be worst hit - victims of our own success.
What is nice now is that some of those going up have a real chance at first team football. Garofani graduated and made his debut for the seniors in midweek and there is a plan for Abbey and either Bildik or Valietti to become senior squad members. Meanwhile, the defender that doesn't go up this season will stay with the youths alng with Lawson and Costello. Sadly it seems to be Dowell who will be the man to miss out and lose his place in the squad.
Because we know we're losing a couple we're in the market for a defender and midfielder still and continue working to try and identify where they will come from. We have cash and, when the right players become available we will spend it. Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later - before we get desperate
