I managed to forget that we were still in this competition! Fortunately we have competent staff in the seniors and in the academy teams who can step up in such circumstances and we also have players like Burke who can take over entire games by themselves. Wilson took the eventual winner well and truth be told it was a good performance for us, maybe I need to forget more often!

Aston Villa U23 2 - 3 Coventry City U23
A real derby here with five goals and two red cards. Thankfully we were on the right side of both of these but it could've been a really different story. Villa took the lead immediately with our former loan player George smashing in early on. This was an immediate concern as we just didn't start well at all and it was all Villa. Thankfully they decided to throw us a lifeline on the 6th minute when Berry flew into Dausch studs up and the referee ordered him from the field. We grew into the game slowly, but the gulf in class was evident. Villa then decided to give us another helping hand as Boonen was sent off for another poor challenge, and with it 11 vs 9 in our favour, we thought we had a chance... cue Villa scoring again to make it 2-0! We had tactical advantage and two extra players, yet Maguire found space to fire past Bell and double their advantage before half time.
The second half was a bit more like us as we changed our tactic and got back into the game as Osaghae found Dausch, and whilst the strikers first effort hit the upright, he was on the spot to finish the rebound. Four minutes later, it was Osaghae again the creator as he found Betjemann in space and he levelled things up. We'd found a way back but Villa were still in it throughout. Our youngsters were fighting for everything, and even with two less men on the field, Villa were pushing and controlling swathes of play. With just seven minutes to go, Villa's pressing and high energy cost them as they ran out of steam and Kai Andrews stole in to grab us a surprise winner. Shepherd also had a good attempt blocked after we'd scored the winner but it was enough and we'd smuggled our way through.
