Aston Villa U23s 1-0 West Bromwich Albion U23s
For a large part of this game it looked like we were going to fail to win at home again and, against a team that continue to be in breach of the squad rules for the U23s, I would probably have walked away if we had. We are working very hard to keep our squad legal and competitive whilst others just seem to be able to ignore the rules continuously. One of the clubs above us is also in breach of the rules - 3 over rated players with no extra slot bought - and it just undermines the credibility of the competition.

I was even more frustrated as we were playing against 10 men for over an hour and still couldn't make the breakthrough. After 10 goals last week we looked like failing to convert one chance this time. Fortunately Rory Wilson came through with his 7th goal of the season as time was running out and we breathed a huge sigh of relief as we closed the game out to take a valuable three points.

We've become a bit isolated in third place - 4 points behind Liverpool in second and 5 ahead of Spurs in 4th. A little bit of limbo for us. We keep trying to close the gap but it's hard chasing two very good sides.

It's always interesting to see what happens to squads as players rate up in the U23s. Assuming Everton and Liverpool buy extra slots, it looks to me like they will only have to promote one before the end of the season. Liverpool on the other hand will likely lose four and we'll be in the same boat - ours could even go to five if Yilmaz plays really well. We have plans in place but it's still a big challenge to keep finding the right players. Good fun though - U23s is probably the part of the game I work hardest on and it's working well with five of our current first team squad products of youth football. That is pleasing and we want to keep the production line going.

So a dropped points bullet dodged here and we move on to the next game still looking upwards and hoping to close that gap. We're in touch - just about.
